2004 Pizzini Coronamento Nebbiolo (King Valley)

2004 Pizzini Coronamento Nebbiolo (King Valley)
You know those wines that you build up the anticipation & when you finally open them they exceed all expectation? They simply overwhelm you? This is one of those wines.
Day 1- Brown tinge in the glass. Nose of ground coffee bean, fennel seeds, cumin, cardamom & sage leaves. Sweet chocolate with a gentle warmth. Early dryness  from tannins that melt quickly to a thrust of rich, flavoursome licorice & tar.
Matched with Duck au Vin with its gamey notes. Sublime & scintillating.
Day 2- Evolved to dry herbs (oregano, five spice) & savoury undertones with violets & rose petals. Tangy, crunchy acidity with a hint of funky marshmallow.
Teamed with a French Pyrenees Ossau Iraty (sheeps milk cheese) with its nutty, olives & creamy twang. Delightful. The Ossau Iraty was sourced from Jones the Grocer, Albury.
The best nebbiolo I have ever tasted. Alluring, heady, earthy & mesmerising. Unfolds like a silk handkerchief in the glass with every smell & taste. Boldly flaunts its nobility. Grand & haunting. I may compare every nebbiolo in the future against this wine. If Barolo is the King of Piedmonte, then Coronamento is the Duke* of the King Valley.

Tasted 25th & 26th November 2012
14.5% Alc Vol (I think)
