2006 Dominio de Tares Bembibre (Bierzo, DO)

2006 Dominio de Tares Bembibre (Bierzo) DO
Day 1- Made with the Spanish Mencia grape variety. Opens with a curious mix of sweet & dried fruit, combined with a hefty whack of kitchen spices. Raspberry, brambleberry, dried dates & figs. There's the ever present five spice, fennel seed & cumin that I find like a crack dog searching for a hit.

Smokey, earthy, yet balanced & poised. Not too here or there. Needs some salt to really let it sing; where's that Manchego? A sliver of Pecorino did the trick. Fruit is more forward & the spices engage the senses more efficiently. Not a wine to rush or press. Swirl, sniff, think. Swirl, sniff, taste, think. Repeat......
Day 2- Bring on the blueberries & zippy blackcurrants. White pepper & ground coriander seed. Softened & rounded out on the edges with a mild sweet tang. A wine that clearly demands food. Intriguing and thought provoking. Now I must try the 2005 again......
