2005 Dominio de Tares Bembibre (Bierzo DO)

2005 Dominio de Tares Bembibre (Bierzo DO)
Day 1- Starts off denser & richer than I remembered. Dry tannins with a vague hint of dried fruit. There's smokiness & licorice & all the usual spicy suspects. In fact I think my taste buds instinctively search for fennel seeds, cumin & mixed spice. Opens with violets, almonds & red fruits. The dried fruit, especially figs comes through the middle, but not stewed or overbearing.

Day 2- Still a deep garnet colour with dense aromas of cloves & spice. Heady violets with funky marshmallow & sarsparilla flavours. Subtle changes to more blue fruit today. Could easily convince me this was a nebbiolo today. It's a thinker & there's a lot to like about it.

2006 Pizzini Nebbiolo (King Valley)

2006 Pizzini Nebbiolo (King Valley)
Crimson, not dark red. Light, almost a brown tinge in the glass. Violets, blueberries, cloves, tar and something else I cannot describe; almost a sweet tang...  Rose petal, orange peel, briar, tar, aniseed/fennel seeds. That's just the nose.
Loving the long, almost crunchy marshmallow aftertaste. Opened up nicely after few hours in the decanter. Crunchy, funky, velvety tannins melt with the gelatinous meat falling off the lamb shanks that were braised in a 2002 Pizzini Sangiovese (left over from the night before), rosemary, tomato & cannellini bean sauce. Great combination of flavours.

2008 Boireann La Cima Nebbiolo (Granite Belt, Qld)

2008 Boireann La Cima Nebbiolo (Granite Belt, Qld)
Light in colour. Rose petals, violets, toasted hazelnuts & tangy blueberries dance in the glass. Dry, taught, chalky tannins. Fennel seeds & five spice. Lingering crunch & funky marshmallow (turkish delight) that I love searching for & embracing about the variety.
Not a provocative Baroloesque nebbiolo, but thoughtful nonetheless. Ticks all the pedigree boxes plus a couple of smiley faces to boot.

2011 Boireann La Cima Barbera (Granite Belt, Qld)

2011 Boireann La Cima Barbera (Granite Belt, Qld)
Sour cherries & bitter dark chocolate. Toasted hazelnuts, freshly ground coffee beans & smokey meats. Very much a thinking man's wine.
Matched the homemade pizza like James Bond wearing a black suit to a bbq. Over dressed? Probably... But bloody good all the same.
